The Importance of
Using Authentic Materials in TEFL
In teaching and learning process
in the classroom, there is something that is called as material and one of type
of material that is used in teaching and learning process namely authentic
material, it is the materials that are in the language community that have been
made to complete some social purpose there (Peacock, 1997). And using authentic
materials in Teaching English as Foreign Language gives good effect toward
language learners namely increasing learner’s
motivation, providing authentic cultural information, providing exposure
to real language, relating more closely to learners’s needs, and supporting a
more creative approach to teaching (Philips and Shettlesworth 1978; Clarke
1989; Peacock 1997, cited in Richards, 2001).
By using authentic materials,
many people that claims that it can increase learner’s motivation in language
learning. Because it can give more stimulation to students than artificial or
non-authentic materials and of course, the materials that are given of
authentic materials more interesting than non-authentic material. That’s why,
it can influence learner’s wish to learn language better in the classroom. For
example, when the students know new vocabulary that they get from authentic
materials, they will try to say it to be used in the class, so continuously
they will be more interesting to learn language and automatically it can
increase learner’s motivation to learn target language in the learning process.
Then, the Importance of Using
Authentic Materials in TEFL; it provides authentic cultural information to
learners so that the students will get cultural information about the target
culture directly. The Learners will know and learn what is happening in the
world. They will study cultures of target language that they are studying and
they also will be able to compare traditions and customs that they are learning
with that they have. so that it will make them more interesting to search
information of another culture and it can add learner’s knowledge them about
cultural information of the target language.
In addition, it will Provide
exposure to real language, the learners will learn about target language
directly. By using authentic material when they are not in real situation or an
authentic situation and they will feel that they are studying real language.
And it can also become a practice toward students when they are in real
situation by using real language that they have learned. After that, it can
also support their motivation in learn foreign language because they are taught
or given real language as if they are in real situation and it can also prepare
them for real communication.
When the teacher uses authentic
materials in TEFL, it can relate more closely to learners‘s needs. In using of
authentic materials in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Many things that
learner will face in teaching and learning process and some of them are the
problems that they will find when learners use authentic materials in teaching
and learning process, so that from the problems that they have faced, the
teacher will diagnose learner’s strengthens and weakness, so it will relate
more closely with what is learners’ needs.
Finally, it can also support a
more creative approach to teaching. When the teacher establish to using
authentic materials in the classroom, the teacher will get a approach that is
more creative to teaching, such as the teacher use internet, videos, etc in
teaching and learning process so that it make a approach that is more creative
and different in teaching process, of course it is hoped in order to be able
increasing learner’s competence or skill in foreign language learning.
Indeed, authentic materials that
are used in Teaching English as a Foreign Language have positive effect toward
teaching and learning process in the classroom especially for foreign language
learners. By using authentic materials can increase learner’s motivation in
learning process, provide authentic cultural information to learners, provide
exposure to real language, relate more closely to learners’ needs, and support
a more creative approach to teaching process. That’s why, as a teacher that
teaches English as a Foreign Language, it can be an alternative to be used in
Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Influence EIT toward My Life
Influence EIT toward My Life
Nowadays,
technology is a part that is very important in the world, almost all of people
use technology when they must do their activities. Modernization will develop
continuously in the world especially technology. So, many people who want to
learn to be able to use E-tools well. Likewise people are like me that was
blind toward technology. I can see now that many things that I didn’t know
about technology at the moment (a few years ago) and what else to used it. A condition
and situation that didn’t support me to be able recognize technology tools at
that moment. When I was in the situation that asked me to have skill to use
E-tools, I was like a primitive person who didn’t know anything. Many problems
that I had faced starting less knowledge about technology, how use technology
and finally less opportunity to learn and have it. Even, at that moment, I
found time lose face when I was a person who is blind to E-tools when I might
relate with E-tools that I didn’t know anything, yet I always asked to people
that is my environment and asked them to teach me how use or advantage
technologies that is in our environment or sometimes I would advantage internet
facilities to become a teacher for me. For example, when I didn’t know how way
to make email, design video marker, etc, I would find out tutorials that is in
internet after that follow those steps. Yet, when
I started studying English Instructional Technology, it
gave me a more chance to be able to learn and enrich my knowledge toward
technology or E-tools, and during in its learning process, I could diagnose
that many things that I haven’t known about technology yet. although when I was
in the classroom there are some things that I didn’t get or be taught directly
just only give clue that asked me and the others to search and learn it yet, it
is no matter for me, even it became stimulation for me to find out what things
that isn’t known yet or needed to be learned. Usually I would search something
that isn’t know yet, then when started curious how it is made, I would search
the tutorials in the internet and started to follow the steps. In order to, it
can add my knowledge about E-tools and how to use and create using it. So, it
can be said that EIT acts very much in my life especially about E-tools.
English Instructional Technology provides many
positive effects toward my knowledge especially about E-tools. Many things that
I have gotten when I was in English Instructional Technology classroom. EIT
provide an influence and change toward me such as it provides stimulation or motivation
to me to be able find out or know many E-tools that I don’t know or learn yet.
After that, it also Increases my self esteem to be able to create in designing something
using E-tools (such as making video marker, games, exercise etc) that perhaps I
can use it when I start teaching someday and it also gives an opportunity to
recognize my favorite that as long as I didn’t know it before, now I realize
that when I must relate with a E-tools such as making a video marker, games,
exercise etc with using E-tools. It provides enjoyment toward me so that it becomes
an entertainment when I must use E-tools in learning process. That’s why; I
prefer to involve technology in learning process. In my opinion, it is more
interesting, relax and enjoyment and perhaps also for the others learners, of
course it can become idea or planning for me that if I am a teacher later, I
will use E-tools to interact or increase students’ motivation so that it gives
positive effect to students. And Nowadays, many things that I have known and be
able to done using E-tools although it is not as well as that people does, but
it can become the best beginning for me to be able design materials that is
better than before so that I can apply it in classroom if I am a teacher someday.
