The Importance of Using Authentic Materials in TEFL

In teaching and learning process in the classroom, there is something that is called as material and one of type of material that is used in teaching and learning process namely authentic material, it is the materials that are in the language community that have been made to complete some social purpose there (Peacock, 1997). And using authentic materials in Teaching English as Foreign Language gives good effect toward language learners namely increasing learner’s  motivation, providing authentic cultural information, providing exposure to real language, relating more closely to learners’s needs, and supporting a more creative approach to teaching (Philips and Shettlesworth 1978; Clarke 1989; Peacock 1997, cited in Richards, 2001).
By using authentic materials, many people that claims that it can increase learner’s motivation in language learning. Because it can give more stimulation to students than artificial or non-authentic materials and of course, the materials that are given of authentic materials more interesting than non-authentic material. That’s why, it can influence learner’s wish to learn language better in the classroom. For example, when the students know new vocabulary that they get from authentic materials, they will try to say it to be used in the class, so continuously they will be more interesting to learn language and automatically it can increase learner’s motivation to learn target language in the learning process.
Then, the Importance of Using Authentic Materials in TEFL; it provides authentic cultural information to learners so that the students will get cultural information about the target culture directly. The Learners will know and learn what is happening in the world. They will study cultures of target language that they are studying and they also will be able to compare traditions and customs that they are learning with that they have. so that it will make them more interesting to search information of another culture and it can add learner’s knowledge them about cultural information of the target language.
In addition, it will Provide exposure to real language, the learners will learn about target language directly. By using authentic material when they are not in real situation or an authentic situation and they will feel that they are studying real language. And it can also become a practice toward students when they are in real situation by using real language that they have learned. After that, it can also support their motivation in learn foreign language because they are taught or given real language as if they are in real situation and it can also prepare them for real communication.
When the teacher uses authentic materials in TEFL, it can relate more closely to learners‘s needs. In using of authentic materials in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Many things that learner will face in teaching and learning process and some of them are the problems that they will find when learners use authentic materials in teaching and learning process, so that from the problems that they have faced, the teacher will diagnose learner’s strengthens and weakness, so it will relate more closely with what is learners’ needs.
Finally, it can also support a more creative approach to teaching. When the teacher establish to using authentic materials in the classroom, the teacher will get a approach that is more creative to teaching, such as the teacher use internet, videos, etc in teaching and learning process so that it make a approach that is more creative and different in teaching process, of course it is hoped in order to be able increasing learner’s competence or skill in foreign language learning.
Indeed, authentic materials that are used in Teaching English as a Foreign Language have positive effect toward teaching and learning process in the classroom especially for foreign language learners. By using authentic materials can increase learner’s motivation in learning process, provide authentic cultural information to learners, provide exposure to real language, relate more closely to learners’ needs, and support a more creative approach to teaching process. That’s why, as a teacher that teaches English as a Foreign Language, it can be an alternative to be used in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Influence EIT toward My Life


Influence EIT toward My Life

Nowadays, technology is a part that is very important in the world, almost all of people use technology when they must do their activities. Modernization will develop continuously in the world especially technology. So, many people who want to learn to be able to use E-tools well. Likewise people are like me that was blind toward technology. I can see now that many things that I didn’t know about technology at the moment (a few years ago) and what else to used it. A condition and situation that didn’t support me to be able recognize technology tools at that moment. When I was in the situation that asked me to have skill to use E-tools, I was like a primitive person who didn’t know anything. Many problems that I had faced starting less knowledge about technology, how use technology and finally less opportunity to learn and have it. Even, at that moment, I found time lose face when I was a person who is blind to E-tools when I might relate with E-tools that I didn’t know anything, yet I always asked to people that is my environment and asked them to teach me how use or advantage technologies that is in our environment or sometimes I would advantage internet facilities to become a teacher for me. For example, when I didn’t know how way to make email, design video marker, etc, I would find out tutorials that is in internet after that follow those steps. Yet, when I started studying English Instructional Technology, it gave me a more chance to be able to learn and enrich my knowledge toward technology or E-tools, and during in its learning process, I could diagnose that many things that I haven’t known about technology yet. although when I was in the classroom there are some things that I didn’t get or be taught directly just only give clue that asked me and the others to search and learn it yet, it is no matter for me, even it became stimulation for me to find out what things that isn’t known yet or needed to be learned. Usually I would search something that isn’t know yet, then when started curious how it is made, I would search the tutorials in the internet and started to follow the steps. In order to, it can add my knowledge about E-tools and how to use and create using it. So, it can be said that EIT acts very much in my life especially about E-tools.
English Instructional Technology provides many positive effects toward my knowledge especially about E-tools. Many things that I have gotten when I was in English Instructional Technology classroom. EIT provide an influence and change toward me such as it provides stimulation or motivation to me to be able find out or know many E-tools that I don’t know or learn yet. After that, it also Increases my self esteem to be able to create in designing something using E-tools (such as making video marker, games, exercise etc) that perhaps I can use it when I start teaching someday and it also gives an opportunity to recognize my favorite that as long as I didn’t know it before, now I realize that when I must relate with a E-tools such as making a video marker, games, exercise etc with using E-tools. It provides enjoyment toward me so that it becomes an entertainment when I must use E-tools in learning process. That’s why; I prefer to involve technology in learning process. In my opinion, it is more interesting, relax and enjoyment and perhaps also for the others learners, of course it can become idea or planning for me that if I am a teacher later, I will use E-tools to interact or increase students’ motivation so that it gives positive effect to students. And Nowadays, many things that I have known and be able to done using E-tools although it is not as well as that people does, but it can become the best beginning for me to be able design materials that is better than before so that I can apply it in classroom if I am a teacher someday.

Biography of Lecturer


Biography of Yuyun  Hendrety, M.Pd




            An educator is one of figure who acts very important in educational world because they have an obligation to educate students to get successfully and one of person who has that obligation is Yuyun Hendrety, M.Pd. She is an lecturer who has hobby reading but not a lot, travelling and singing. She can be like this; of course it is not free from her family background, educational background, career and achievements.
Firs of all, her family background, Mrs. Yuyun Hendrety, M.Pd is a person who is from Palembang. She was born in Palembang on October 23th 1980.  Her parents are the late Zed ranchman and Hj. Zahro. Mrs. Yuyun had already married with Nova subianto S.H. and they are blessed with two sons, they are M. Faiz Najmi and M. Azka Zafran.




The second, her educational background, Mrs. Yuyun had ever studied at Elementary school 165 Palembang. After that, she continued her study at Islamic secondary school number II Palembang and at Islamic senior high school number I Palembang. Further, in 2004, she got her under graduate degree at University of Sriwijaya after that in 2011, she continued her post graduate in Major English at Pasca Sarjana University of Sriwijaya.
            Furthermore, Mrs. Yuyun has experiences about her career, she had ever taught at Sriwijaya University languages institute In University of Sriwijaya. And now, she also teaches at University of Sriwijaya, MDP University, IAIN University and Tridinanti University.
In the last, her achievements, Mrs. Yuyun was ever become a presenter at Teflin seminar held by Pasca Sarjana University of Sriwijaya and also become a presenter at Sriwijaya University language education international conference held by FKIP University Sriwijaya.
Indeed, Mrs. Yuyun is a lecturer who has motherhood character, she grows becoming someone who responsible to educate another person that form from her family, education, job experiences, and performance. Next, the author hopes by this biography will grow another educator that is ready to be the next generation.

Using mobile phones in English teaching


Mobile learning: how students can improve their English anytime, anywhere

Using cell phones in teaching and learning process actually is needed by learners, especially busy learners who don’t have time to do teaching and learning process in classroom.  It motivate people to using cell phones to support kinds of learning especially language learning. There are many mobile apps available for English language students.

The style of English learning person can change by Usage mobile devices and apps. Using technology and language learning make a teacher creatively, has many basics or resources, materials of learning, and of course, has many chances to teach students everything of the worldwide. According to Emma Segev, she believes that technology is something that is important in the classroom. Many students who are using mobile learning to connect to the web to learn in anywhere and anytime. At the time, people would like to do something more quickly, inclusive of learning.

Emma Segev has a strategy in handle or motivates the learners that have a business, so she chosen to using mobile phones to promote her student to study anytime and anyplace. She introduces 5 wonderful of apps that can be used by students for additional exercise: British Council apps, Duolingo, Two min English, Game to learn English Powowbox and Real English.

But Emma Segev’d chosen Whatsapp, Ipadio and facebook groups that is used by her :  WhatSapp, a mobile massage that is used to send and receive messages (audio, video, images) and the students can design an audio, video etc, that they can create anything, then post anything in the groups and also request their opinion or response about it.

Ipadio, a apps that can be used to interview, record the lesson and send it for student’s friends that didn’t come in the classroom. The students can create anything (with photos, audios, poem etc)

A group can become solution to closed communication with student, the students and teacher can share the ideas, task, book reviews, songs, picture and etc, for example in facebook groups.

Indeed, the way that is easy for studying it is hoped we can ask for them to enable study in their business and it can be hoped to accelerate their progress. (Emma Segev.)

Plus and minus of integrating technology into the English Classroom

EIT is English Instructional Technology. It is one of tools that are used by many people to achieve a teaching more productive in teaching and learning process. And method that uses technology is one. Many people are thought that using technology in classroom will increase student’s interesting in studying in order to them are not so bored. And it had already proved so that Technology is very advantages in the English Classroom but not only its plus but also technology has minus of integrating technology into the English Classroom. Okay well. First I will tell you about its plus:

 I.      To cultivate students’ Interest in study
    Era of globalization almost of all activities uses technology, so that students prefer to using technology in their daily. So that, education support to using technology and it is hoped it can give a sense of reality and functions very well that support students’ Interest and motivation in study and their involvement in class activities because the learning environment is more enjoyable
.
II.      To promote student’s Communication Capacity
Using technology can help student to practice communication, them invited to positive thinking, creative, and give many chances to student to show their communication skills among students or between student and teacher such as a discussion, debate etc.

III.      To widen students’ knowledge to gain an Insightful understand to western Culture.
By technology students will get many information not only focus on one resource (books) but they will increase their knowledge about western culture by technology. And by knowledge and sharing, it will make them actively discussion with knowledge that they have.

IV.      To improve teaching effect
Multimedia teachings make the best of class time, and class efficiency. Allocation of time that is impossible to discuss all content so that Multimedia teachings are solution to solve it. It goes beyond time and space, creates more vivid, visual, authentic environment for English learning, stimulates students’ initiatives and economizes class time meanwhile increases class information.

V.      To improve interaction between teacher and student.
Multimedia teachings can be closely between teacher and student and it can also help student to practice communication so that it can develop their communication competence.

VI.      Creates a context for Language Teaching
Multimedia teachings will make the class lively, the learning environment is more enjoyable, more interesting and also rise students motivation in learning English.

VII.      To provide flexibility to course content
Multimedia teaching is also flexible. Because we can’t only created inside but outside of classroom. So that, it make it more simple.

But not only above technology also has plus namely :
  1.     .    Using of technology can improve student outcomes. And it can help to improve students’ performance on achievement tests
  2.  technology can equip students to independently organize their learning process. 
  3. Technology can form students’ skills in technology. so that when they finish their graduate they also have a technology skill.
  4. technology can support key practices of student-centered learning, Technology can equip teachers to assess an individual student’s strengths and needs.
  5.  The use of technology in EFL teaching can motivate students because the learning environment is more enjoyable.
  6. The use of computer technology in EFL classroom can help students to understand the complex concepts more easily
  7.  Using different kind texts, graphics. videos, pictures
  8.  Having online lessons, students can use authentic language
  9.  storing materials for future use
  10.  having fun and variation
Specific technology literacy skills that the National Educational Technology Standards (International Society for Technology in Education, 2007) encourage teachers to incorporate across content areas include:
  1. using technology to demonstrate creative thinking and to develop innovative products,
  2.  using technology to communicate and work collaboratively,
  3. applying digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information,
  4. using critical thinking and problem solving to make informed decisions regarding appropriate digital tools and resources,
  5. understanding human cultural and societal issues related to technology and practicing legal and ethical behavior,
  6. Understanding technology operations and concepts.

The minus of integrating technology into the English Classroom:
1)      Major means replaced by the assisting one
There is not confident of teacher to handle it so that the teacher and student only focus on  the screen that’s why There is no eye contact between teacher and student. So that it doesn’t appear effective class.
2)      Loss of speaking Communication
It is effect loss of speaking communication between teacher and student because teachers sound instead of multimedia sound. So that student also made viewers rather than the participants of class activities.

3)      The restriction of students ‘thinking potential.
There is no invited to student thinking to solve the problem, to manage their skill and do feedback. Because it is only focus on multimedia.
4)      Abstract thinking replaced by imaginable thinking
Loss abstract thinking and it is instead of imaginable think.
5)      There could appear technical problems
6)      lack of IT skills both teachers and students
7)      Mixed ability- some students are advanced and some are slow
8)      Classroom management-teacher could find it difficult to draw students' attention
9)      Slow Internet connection

Conclusion:
Technology can support key practices of student-centered learning, and attract the student’s interest, motivation and etc.
